Whatever you say about crystal clear waters, a white sandy beach and enchanting landscapes will be very little to describe what you will really face by coming to Elafonissi beach. The crystal clear waters of the sea in this exotic place have beautiful colors in all shades of blue and blue. In many places where the waves pop out, the sand has an extraordinary pink hue, a unique feature of this secluded beach.
Elafonissi is 76 km west of Chania and 5 km south of Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, in the southwest of Crete. Elafonissi is an elongated one, which is often “broken” in two parts by the water giving the impression that it is a separate island. Elafonissi is a protected area of Natura 2000. The island is full of sand dunes and dugouts (such as cedar trees). Endangered turtles careta careta and various rare animals nest on the island and strictly banning the removal of plants, animals and sand from the area.
Exotic beaches with white sand and turquoise waters, reminiscent of the Caribbean, are formed on both sides of the peninsula. The sand is pink in many places, taking its color from thousands of broken shells. Close to the break point of the peninsula, the water does not exceed 1m, creating a small lagoon, ideal for children. You can easily pass the lagoon to get to the “island”, having your staff with you, because the water is very shallow there.
The eastern side of the beach, in front of the lagoon, is well organized and has the most people. There are umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, snack bars and changing rooms. Also, near the beach there is a huge area for parking and, even more, some rooms for rent. On the contrary, the beaches on both sides of the island are less crowded and are the most beautiful, with amazing blue colors. If you want to stay isolated or naked, you can walk along the peninsula until you find a quiet cove that you like! There are always plenty of creeks available for nudists.
You can reach by car (1.5 hours) or by bus from Chania. The road to Elafonissi is narrow and full of turns, but the beauty of the landscape is stunning. In addition, there are plenty of dining options at the village of Chrysoskalitissa, 5 km north.
